Hi I'm trying to train my two year old black lab so he responds whenever i blow a whistle. I want him to respond to the whistle so i can have his attention to give him a command when hunting so i can call him off crippled birds that are to far away. Helpful techniques, types of whistles are much appreciated.
Thanks, Jake |

I use pealess whistle- but any should work- I start with sit command- verbal sit- one toot-whistle- after a few times forget verbal- then do come in (here) three or 4 quick toots and also 2 toot-for OK-then when hunting I just toot here when he gets too far out or sit to stop him on missed bird- he takes whistle commands better than verbal ones.If I need to direct him to down bird i always stop him first and then give over or back.if dogs knows his verbal commands whistle should come easy.

Hey WildWillie, You're not too far from me here in Niagara.
Do you know other trainers near you? They would be a good place to start. |
